This week, Venice faced the worst acqua alta since 1966. The flood has killed two people and nearly destroy St Mark’s Basilica. The tide reach 187 centimeters and will have a lasting impact on the city. One of the most obvious reason is off course climate change. But it cannot take all the blame. With traditional industries abandoning the area, tourist overflowing and massive cruise ships passing near the lagune, Critics questions the role of authorities, who favored tourist industry at the expense of sustainable environment for the past decade, in this dramatic situation. With an ever increasing number of travelers every year, the question of over tourism must be tackle sooner than later to preserve cities and natural landscape.
