Uber is one step closer to becoming a Travel-Super-App!

Last week, Uber revealed a new functionality for its app, Uber Eats, called “Uber List.” The idea is for users to curate their own favorite restaurant lists and share them with their friends. By itself, this functionality is not really a breakthrough… Airbnb has curated lists already, Google Maps too, and if you are French, you’re most likely already using Mapster to do exactly that.

Nonetheless, Uber’s development of this feature is interesting for several reasons:

  • Curation is back: Even with the development of AI, and what could have been an automatic suggestion based on your preferences or your history of reservations, Uber has chosen to push for curation. It gives you the impression that your friends, and not a machine, are making reservations for you.
  • Social media: Travel and dining are better in groups. Airbnb is also pushing in this direction; the idea is to facilitate social decision-making and enhance community building. It simplifies the coordination process, making decisions more communal and enjoyable.
  • Moving to Super App: I believe this feature is also a big step towards becoming a super app, putting it head-to-head with Google, which already is one. This move shows that Uber is not just about getting you from point A to point B anymore; it’s also about helping you plan what to do once you arrive.
